Just Thinking - Permanent Things

We can look back on a time when the idea that reality was fixed was non-negotiable, and the Scriptures certainly attest to this idea. John’s Gospel begins with the majestic words, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” We cannot begin to imagine how important this reality is until we explore the absence or rejection of these key truths as essential features of life. Similarly, Isaiah 40:6-8 reveals a tremendous contrast: “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” The impermanence and temporality of all things is contrasted with the permanence and assuredness of God and His Word. The very notion of permanent things seems highly implausible in a world where obsolescence is built in as part of the planning and manufacturing process.
