Townhall.com::For Joel Osteen, Theology is Optional::By Paul Edwards: "“I try to leave them better off than they were before,” is how Joel Osteen defined the endgame for his multi-million dollar ministry of self-help and empowerment during a recent twelve minute segment on CBS’ “60 Minutes.” The title of the segment was “Joel Osteen Answers His Critics.” Ironically, the segment may have only bolstered his critics while adding more. Just Thinking - Permanent Things

We can look back on a time when the idea that reality was fixed was non-negotiable, and the Scriptures certainly attest to this idea. John’s Gospel begins with the majestic words, “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” We cannot begin to imagine how important this reality is until we explore the absence or rejection of these key truths as essential features of life. Similarly, Isaiah 40:6-8 reveals a tremendous contrast: “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” The impermanence and temporality of all things is contrasted with the permanence and assuredness of God and His Word. The very notion of permanent things seems highly implausible in a world where obsolescence is built in as part of the planning and manufacturing process.

At CPC each Sunday at 9:45:

GENESIS (led by Stephen Hiemstra)

Have you ever wondered why God created the universe or whether God has a sense of humor or, maybe, who has the most dysfunctional family of all time? If these questions are the least bit interesting to you (or not!), please join us this fall for a study of the Book of Genesis.

Genesis means origin. In the Book of Genesis, we learn about the origins of the universe, of sin, and of the nation of Israel. But, Genesis is about relationships with God, with our brothers and sisters, and with our neighbors. In Genesis, God is sovereign and providential. The foundation provided by Genesis is widely cited in the New Testament and provides insight into the person of Jesus Christ and his ministry on earth.

This study will begin in October and end with Easter—about 20 weeks. The format will be a mixture of reading, discussion, and lecture. There are no assigned readings outside class, but those interested in a study guide, might use Jeffrey Enoch Feinberg’s, Walk Genesis! A Messianic Jewish Devotional Commentary. Notes for the class will be posted on the web at: http://members.cox.net/shiemstra.

REFORMATION OVERVIEW (led by Neil Craigan)

Based on the Gateway Films/Vision Video church history film series, these six half-hour programs vividly bring to life the Reformation, its colorful leaders, and history-shaping turning points. Learn how John Wycliffe, John Hus, Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, William Tyndale and Anabaptists shaped what we believe.

THE INVISIBLE WAR (led by Christine Sullivan)

If Christ was victorious on the cross, why is life still such a struggle? God’s enemy, therefore our enemy, comes as a lying thief to steal, kill and destroy; and we are his targets! This eight-part DVD series by Chip Ingram, President of Walk Thru the Bible, exposes the enemy’s schemes and strategies and prepares us with God’s “spiritual armor” to stand firm and be victorious.

God Goes Online

YouTube has produced its share of celebrities: Lonelygirl15, the lip-syncing Chinese teenagers known as the Back Dormitory Boys, and Tyson, the skateboarding bulldog, to name a few.

But no single video by any of these user-generated superstars has ever attracted as many viewings as a clip of a little girl wearing a "Princess" T-shirt, reciting the Bible's Psalm 23. That video has been viewed more than 3.7 million times--not on Google's YouTube but on Godtube.com, the site's upstart competitor.
